A career change led by the passion to care – Mandy’s story

We would like to introduce you to Mandy Franklin, care professional for Radfield Home Care Wakefield & Dewsbury.

Tell us about your previous work/career background.

Prior to joining Radfield I had over 16 years of experience working at a primary school, having started there when my two boys were young. I decided though that it was time for a career change and because of the enjoyment I feel from helping others I wanted to look for a job as a carer.

What has inspired you to enter the home care sector?

Several years ago I nursed my partner, who was ill with cancer. It was important to both of us that he spent the last few weeks of his life at home with his family and friends around him. There are so many people that need support in order to remain in their own home and I decided that I would enjoy helping them achieve this as a home carer.

What are your career aspirations?

At present I am enjoying being a carer but may in the future consider doing an NVQ in Health and Social Care.

Any special moments with clients you would like to share?

One day I was chatting with a client about where they used to live and it turned out that we had both lived in the same farmhouse. The client had known my Uncle and it was lovely to share a few stories about him.

What do you love most about your job and working for Radfield Home Care?

I love every aspect of my job. Working full-time means there are long days but you get lots of time off. You are also paid for your travel time and mileage. Radfield Home Care looks after their staff and you always feel appreciated. I feel so lucky to be part of such an amazing company.
