Helping to combat loneliness and isolation in Ormskirk this winter

As we move into the colder months, the shorter days and winter chill can lead to feelings of isolation for many in our community. At Radfield Home Care Ormskirk, we’re passionate about helping people stay connected to the things that matter most, and this winter, we’re launching a new initiative to combat loneliness in Ormskirk and nearby areas. In partnership with local charities, businesses, and volunteers, we are creating a network of “warm spaces” where our clients and community members can gather, enjoy a warm meal, and feel a sense of connection.

A warm and welcoming space for everyone

At the heart of this initiative is the Hope Street Community Hub and Café, a non-profit organisation led by Sheila Byrne and a dedicated team of volunteers. Together, we’ve created an inviting space where anyone feeling isolated can find warmth, conversation, and companionship. Our goal is simple: to offer a place for people to connect, share their stories, and enjoy the company of others. This space is an essential resource for support for older people this winter in Ormskirk.

Dave Bellis, Director and Owner of Radfield Home Care Ormskirk, said “We know that winter can be an especially hard time for so many in our community. Our initiative is based on the belief that everyone deserves a warm place and welcoming company. By joining forces, we’re able to offer people a real sense of belonging.”

These warm spaces are more than just a way to escape the cold—they are an opportunity for our community to come together, foster friendships, and support one another. The Hope Street Hub is a wonderful example of how small efforts can make a big difference to those facing loneliness, particularly during the winter months.

Building Connections Through Community Events in Ormskirk

One highlight of this initiative was our “Winter Warmer” event, held in collaboration with Tesco Burscough and Hope Street Community Hub. Visitors enjoyed a free bowl of warm soup and a bread roll with the purchase of any drink, creating a cosy space to reconnect with friends or meet new faces.

We were deeply grateful to Tesco’s Community Champion, Hayley Bellamy, for supporting this event and helping us spread warmth across Ormskirk. Events like these provide simple but meaningful moments of relief and companionship and remind us that community connection can be a powerful tool in support for isolated individuals in Ormskirk.

Extending Support for Older People This Winter in Ormskirk

In addition to our work with Hope Street, we are partnering with other local businesses in and around Ormskirk, such as the Grand Hotel in Southport and Toby Carvery in Ormskirk. These locations have generously offered support and designated warm spaces for Radfield Home Care clients, their families, and local residents, giving everyone a safe and welcoming place to spend time together.

Our wider initiative includes outreach events at venues like Tesco, Dunelm, and local garden centres, where we continue to raise awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society while promoting our community warm spaces in Ormskirk and surrounding areas. It is crucial that as many people as possible are informed about these spaces and encouraged to visit, whether for warmth, companionship, or simply a friendly face. This outreach represents an important step in how to combat isolation in Ormskirk.

Bringing warmth and support to our community

This winter, as households across the UK feel the impact of rising living costs and budget pressures, Radfield Home Care remains committed to supporting our community. We envision a close-knit society where everyone feels included, connected, and supported—and where simple gatherings like our warm spaces provide comfort in times of need.

Our initiative highlights the power of Ormskirk community support initiatives and the difference that shared meals and kind conversations can make. Through our ongoing efforts, Radfield is building a network of warmth and companionship across Ormskirk, one bowl of soup and one meaningful interaction at a time.

We welcome other local businesses, volunteers, and community organisations to join us in supporting this cause, helping ensure that everyone in Ormskirk has a place to feel valued and connected this winter.
