Celebrating Motherhood: Strength, Love, and Unwavering Dedication

Mother
[Muhth-er] noun
A woman who gives and sustains life
Who loves unconditionally
Who teaches, inspires and motivates
A protector, a carer and a keeper of memories
Is greatly loved and admired by all

The Journey of Motherhood

Motherhood is a journey that doesn’t just begin with your child’s first milestones. It starts with the anticipation and worry of who your child will grow up to be and if you’ll be a good enough Mum for your child. But it is your love, sacrifice and dedication that shapes the lives of those so fortunate to be nurtured by it.

For Mother’s Day, I would like to celebrate every single mother who gives without expectations, who loves without limits, and who is the unshakable foundation of families, communities, and society. No matter what stage of motherhood you are in, your immeasurable impact on the world as we know it would not be the same without you.

Insights from Mothers at Radfield Home Care Watford and Borehamwood

I have asked some mothers at Radfield Home Care Watford and Borehamwood about their experiences as a mum and any advice they may be able to share.

Georgina – Our Day Centre Activity Coordinator

Georgina has a 4-year-old son and shared her insight on motherhood.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to new mums?

You are enough. Mum guilt is a real thing. But I always think that if you’re worried about being a good mum, you’re already a good mum. It’s so easy for us to think we don’t do enough for our children. The one thing our children want is for us to be there.

What do you hope your children learn from you as they grow up?

To be patient, love, have fun, and have empathy.

How has motherhood changed your perspective on life?

I have learnt to take my time and laugh more. Don’t put off what you can do today.

Lavanya – Our Director

Lavanya has two teenage children, aged 17 and 14, and has given us her self-reflection on motherhood.

What has being a mum taught you about yourself?

Being a mum has taught me that I’m far stronger and more resilient than I ever realised. I’ve learned how much I’m capable of handling, even on the tough days, and how quickly I can adapt to new challenges. It’s also taught me the importance of patience, not only with my children but also with myself. I’ve realised that it’s okay to not be perfect and that it’s okay to ask for help when I need it. Motherhood has shown me how deep my capacity for love is, and how much joy can come from the simplest moments. It’s a constant journey of self-discovery, and I’ve grown in ways I never expected.

What’s one thing you wish more people would appreciate about mums?

Never judge other mothers. Every mother is doing her best with the circumstances she’s in. We all have our own unique challenges, and it’s important to remember that we’re all trying to navigate motherhood the best we can. Judging other mums can be harmful, especially when we don’t know the full picture of their lives. Instead, let’s support one another and offer understanding, because we all need it.

Remembering Mothers We Have Lost

For those of us who have lost our mothers, the ache of their absence is a quiet, lingering presence in our lives. It’s in the moments when we hear a song that reminds us of their voice or in the stillness of a room where their laughter used to fill the air. Though they are no longer physically here, their love remains embedded in our hearts, like an indelible imprint that time cannot erase.

We carry with us the wisdom they shared, the warmth of their embrace, and the strength they gave us. In our memories, they live on—never truly gone, but instead woven into the fabric of who we are. While we may never stop missing them, we find comfort in knowing that their love continues to guide us, shaping our lives in ways only a mother’s love can.
