At Radfield Home Care Stamford, Peterborough & Rutland, we believe in going above and beyond to ensure the people we care for feel valued, heard, and supported. One truly heartwarming moment recently demonstrated this commitment when our dedicated field supervisor, Rose, took it upon herself to make a cherished wish come true for our 104-year-old client, Dorothy Webb.
Mrs. Webb, a former headteacher at Uffington CE Primary School from 1958 to 1980, had not returned to the school since her retirement. Having lived in the schoolhouse next door, the school was not just a workplace but a place filled with treasured memories. However, she was adamant that she would only return if she received a formal invitation from the school.
Understanding the significance of this wish, Rose reached out to the school to share Mrs. Webb’s story. The school was more than happy to oblige, extending a heartfelt invitation to welcome their former headteacher back. To make the day even more special, we coordinated with a local newspaper to cover the occasion while ensuring the visit remained a complete surprise.
On the day of the visit, Rose assisted Mrs. Webb in getting ready, keeping the destination a secret. Upon arrival at the school, the surprise was revealed, and the sheer joy on Mrs. Webb’s face was indescribable. She was warmly welcomed by the headmaster, Mr. Evans, and taken on a tour of the school, rekindling memories of her time there.
Reflecting on the past, Mr. Evans shared:
“It was lovely to meet Mrs. Webb. We talked about how the school has changed quite considerably since her time as headteacher. The front part of the school—now the head’s office, the bursar’s office, and the two rooms upstairs—were part of the old schoolhouse where Mrs. Webb used to live. My office was her old sitting room! Back then, the school had one classroom, with a glass door partition in the middle, splitting the children into infants and juniors.”
Mrs. Webb was also given the opportunity to interact with the current students, sharing stories from her tenure and answering their eager questions. As a special tribute, she was presented with a merit award in recognition of her outstanding service to Uffington CE Primary School—an honour usually reserved for students.
The visit was an emotional and joyful experience, filled with nostalgia, laughter, and heartfelt connections. Mrs. Webb expressed her deep gratitude, stating that it was one of the most meaningful things anyone had ever done for her. For someone who has experienced over a century of life, this sentiment speaks volumes.
