Become a hero like Mary

We would like to introduce you to Mary, a care professional with Radfield Home Care Havering and Brentwood. Mary has been with Radfield over a year now and absolutely embodies the Radfield values – ‘we are a family’. She is full of kindness and her clients absolutely love her. We often get clients requesting to see more of Mary as she shows such compassion and goes above and beyond with all of her clients.

We asked Mary to share the challenges of working as a care professional throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.

What sacrifices are you making in order to continue your work caring for others?

I am juggling my children being at home single handedly. They are fortunate to have a place at school, which does help.

Could you provide examples of going above and beyond in your role during these difficult weeks?

I have been to Tesco’s a number of times to collect food for clients. I have queued up in my own time, to get her food for my kids and also for my clients.

What are your greatest challenges?

Getting food for both my family and my own children has been a challenge. For example the other day I was trying to buy 3 packs of cereal as I needed 2 boxes for my kids and some All Bran for a client. However I was not allowed to buy 3 packs due to the restrictions in place. Luckily a kind local lady called Terry, someone I knew, offered to buy this for me. It is lovely to see people being so kind.

I have also had instances where people queuing to get in the supermarket have let me go in front, so she can get back to work.

Do you have any special moments over the last few weeks that you would like to share?

When I was out working the other day, I was about to go to a client’s house and a couple were walking their dog over the road – the couple were kind enough to give me a big ‘well done’ and a clap – it’s very nice to see such kindness!

Jennie, co-director of Radfield Home Care explained,

“Mary is so diligent with her work, she is an excellent communicator and has a great relationship with the office team, providing updates on her clients. She has been instrumental with one client in particular, helping us work with the family to trigger an Occupational therapy assessment and improve the equipment in the clients home so it was safer and easier for her to stay safe, happy and independent at home. Our client Margaret, doesn’t stop singing Mary’s praises and sees Mary like her granddaughter.”
