From Volunteer to Care Provider: Adam’s Journey

Radfield Home Care has been a trusted provider of premium home care for over 40 years, committed to helping individuals live well, stay connected, and age comfortably at home. I’ve always been passionate about helping others, and my journey to becoming the Director and owner of Radfield Home Care Chingford & Loughton is deeply rooted in this desire. It has been a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated team, and I’m excited to share how my journey evolved from a volunteer to a care provider in Chingford & Loughton.

The Start of My Journey

Before joining Radfield Home Care, I spent several years working in Asia, which broadened my understanding of different cultures and lifestyles. When I returned to the UK in 2015, enriched by my experiences abroad, I felt a deep desire to give back to my community. I began volunteering as a Meals on Wheels driver in 2019, delivering meals to individuals who needed support. This role provided me with early insight into how small acts of kindness, like meal deliveries, can be a lifeline for someone who is isolated or struggling.

Alongside my work with Meals on Wheels, I volunteered with organisations such as Age UK and the Samaritans. These experiences taught me about the challenges older adults face, from physical health struggles to emotional isolation. It became clear to me that good care is about much more than just physical needs—it’s about maintaining a sense of purpose, emotional well being, and staying connected to the community.

How Volunteering Shaped My Understanding of Older Adults’ Needs

Through my volunteering work, I came to appreciate the vital role that community support plays in helping older adults maintain their independence. Many of the people I visited lived alone, and the simple act of delivering a meal often provided their only social interaction of the day. These moments taught me how essential companionship is and how it can make a significant difference in someone’s quality of life.

My time with Age UK and the Samaritans deepened my understanding of the unique needs of older people. I saw how ageing can bring both physical and emotional challenges, from mobility issues to the risk of social isolation. I also learned how important it is to listen, offer empathy, and provide a sense of connection. These experiences reinforced my belief that ageing well is about more than just physical care—it’s about emotional health and maintaining relationships.
