Be There Event: Strengthening Community Connections for Older People in Wycombe, Beaconsfield & South Bucks

Radfield Home Care Wycombe, Beaconsfield & South Bucks joined forces with Shelburne Lodge Nursing Home to host an inspiring Be There Event, part of their ongoing “Here for the Community” project. This collaborative initiative united local organisations and service providers to foster wellness, strengthen connections, and provide support for older people in High Wycombe, Beaconsfield and South Bucks.

With the theme “Helping our community age well by staying connected to what matters most,” the event highlighted the shared commitment of Radfield Home Care and Shelburne Lodge to improving the lives of older adults. By fostering meaningful connections and providing access to essential resources, the initiative sought to empower individuals to live with dignity and independence.

A Day of Learning and Connection

The Be There Event offered a variety of informative talks, engaging workshops, and live demonstrations. These activities were designed to showcase practical solutions for older people and their caregivers while emphasising the importance of community collaboration.

Event Highlights

  • Hana Beever from Radfield Home Care
    I had the privilege of opening the event with a warm welcome, introducing Radfield Home Care’s Be There initiative, which is dedicated to helping older adults in High Wycombe, Beaconsfield and South Bucks stay connected to their community and access the personalised care they deserve.
  • Richard Chalmers from South Bucks Hospice
    Richard shared the compassionate work of the Butterfly Hospice, explaining how hospice care goes beyond medical support to provide comfort, dignity, and holistic care for individuals and families. His heartfelt talk resonated with attendees and showcased the role of local hospices in fostering community connections.
  • Mansukh Chander, Physiotherapist from Barchester
    Mansukh led an interactive falls prevention workshop, offering practical exercises to improve strength and balance. The session also provided tips on creating safer home environments to help older people in Wycombe, Beaconsfield and South Bucks remain active and confident in their daily lives.
  • Wycombe Library’s Dementia-Friendly Resources
    Representatives from Wycombe Library highlighted services designed to support individuals with dementia, such as large-print books, audiobooks, and the innovative Library Buddy programme, which ensures everyone can continue enjoying reading and learning.
  • Caroline Romero from Grey Matter Consultancy
    Caroline’s session guided attendees through the complex process of accessing benefits, offering clear advice on financial support for older people in Wycombe and surrounding areas. Her insights empowered attendees to take charge of their financial well being.
  • Shopmobility Demonstration
    The Shopmobility team showcased their range of mobility aids, including scooters and wheelchairs, which allow older adults to shop independently and safely. They also discussed recent accessibility improvements in local public spaces.
  • Sue Granshaw from Alzheimer’s Research UK
    Sue presented the latest advancements in Alzheimer’s research, shedding light on early diagnosis and treatment breakthroughs. She encouraged attendees to get involved in research efforts to improve care and support for those affected.
  • Trading Standards Video on Scam Prevention
    A powerful video session by Trading Standards educated attendees on how to recognise and avoid scams targeting older adults. Practical advice and real-world examples empowered the audience to safeguard their finances.
